I thought I would start sharing a few tricks I have uncovered over the last 3 1/2 years with my daughter. For reference Abby's hair is about 2 inches above her waist when straight, but she has curly hair so it sits a few inches below her shoulders.
You NEED to go get Scunci Polybands (I think Goody may make them, too). These are tiny elastics a little bit bigger than the diameter of my finger. They hold the smallest amount of hair and they do not hurt when removed. They come in a big pack of assorted colors and they are around $3. I have bought them at Wal-Mart and at CVS. I have used these for years - I started using them with my dog (Shih Tzu) when I would put his hair in a little top knot. These aren't so tiny that you can't handle them, though.
I do double them up for the big ponytails now, but I didn't when she was smaller. Also know, these are disposable one-time use type of elastics.
I hope this helps many more little girls get "pigs" as my daughter use to call them. Now she protests against pigs, "One ponytail only mommy." I thought I had a few more years of having things my way!
